Birthday Weekend!

Birthday Cake!

Picture
Yes, it was my birthday on Monday, hence the lack of post. I said goodbye to the last few days of my twenties and look ahead to a new decade filled with diapers and runny noses and soccer practice and the smell of yogurt and a house full of dirty socks and it is good.
This was my birthday cake. It was the first time I used this recipe I got from my Mother-In-Law, and honestly, it seemed foolproof. It was not. It's just angel food cake, whipped cream, strawberry jello, and strawberries, and yet...
I used the hippie gelatin-free jello, which I love and has served me well, but.
I think it melted. When I opened the fridge after it has chilled for nearly 24 hours, there was a pool of strawberry-smelling liquid on the shelf. The top half of the cake was DELICIOUS, but the bottom half of the cake was, well, wet. I guess it's better if I only eat most of half of a cake anyway (as opposed to most of a whole cake).

Birthday Presents!

I like to spread out present opening, so I opened one around each mealtime. Before breakfast, I opened some GORGEOUS fabric my sister sent me. There is a really cool store out near Raleigh (where she lives) that carries French and African fabric. Coolness, non?

Birthday Laundry!

Picture
Birthday girl or no, the laundry must needs be done. So I did it. 5 helped. Kind of. He takes great issue with any type of item that is folded and/or stacked. No, not all that helpful, but he makes everything more fun.

Birthday Kisses!

Picture
Speaking of his royal cuteness, I stole MANY a kiss, willing or no, from that sweet boy. Best. Present. Ever.

Birthday Family!

Picture
My boys were the best birthday companions a girl could ask for. They even let me sleep in until 8:30!

Gratuitous Birthday-unrelated Treats!

Picture
This is not birthday related. My husband does a project with his students that involves marshmallows. I make these with the leftovers. They are possibly the most disgustingly delicious thing ever. You can find the recipe here.

Hope you had a super excellent Labor Day weekend as well!

Quilt Top Hotness

Here it is! Woot woot!

Picture
So it's not done, yet. But it IS photographed! Hooray! It was dark this morning, but it cleared up just in time for me to take some lovely pictures on our slightly ragged clothesline.
Picture
A few days ago, I dyed the muslin for the back a nice gold color, and I'm going to screenprint a grid of wonky circle guys on it, well, because I can. I wanted some more BRIGHT COLOR in our bedroom, and this way it's reversible.
I can't believe it was just over a week ago that I was lamenting my desire to quilt RIGHT NOW. I guess that's what happens when you have a fabric-buying compulsion and the ability to act without thinking. Yay!
Picture
This sandwiched strip on the left is the "top" or what will be just below our heads, and it will be repeated at the bottom as well, but there was no room on the clothesline for it, so you can imagine it.
The only part I have left to sew is another strip along the bottom, where you can't see. Honestly, I have no idea what's going to go there.

Stamp of Approval

Picture
5 has approved of every step along the way. I show him each bit as I sew it, and then lay it out on the floor when I'm done so he can crawl around and drool on it. Very crucial steps.
Picture
He is, however, a little disappointed that I will not let him help any more than I do. This causes some problems sometimes. Like, he pulls the cords out of the sewing machine, or he rips the fabric off the table. He is a stubborn little dude.

Have a Wonderful Labor Day Weekend Everyone!
I will NOT be posting on Monday, because it's MY BIRTHDAY!
I hope to see you Wednesday!
