Grownup Hot Cocoa Recipe
Sometimes coffee and tea just don't do it and it is not the time for something harder. It is the time for Hot Chocolate! Not a mix from a package- NO! Something delicious and refined. Sophisticated and grown up- just like you (at least kind of). This is a drink you could proudly serve to guests, think book group, game night, movie night, or perhaps you bridge group (oh yeah, bridge is going to be cool again).
If you want to make it even more decadent, add real whipped cream. Not marshmallows or that whipped topping from a can. That would just be silly.
Ingredients
2 heaping Tbsp cocoa- the good stuff, not Hershey's, make it Dutch at least
2 flat Tbsp sugar- again, the less white, the better, but not too big of crystals, they won't dissolve
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1-2 pinches cayenne (opt) could replace with cardamom if you don't like any heat
enough milk of any kind to fill your cup (I use almond milk)
Mix the dry ingredients in the bottom of your mug. Add about 2 Tbsp of milk and mix thoroughly! I mean it, no lumps or you will be sorry later. Slowly add milk, stirring smooth in between, until your cup is full. Microwave for no more than 1 min at a time, stirring in between, until desired hotness is reached.
You can do this on the stove as well, and I would recommend it if you are making multiple servings. Do the same thing, but in a saucepan over low med heat and stir frequently. This method will take a lot longer.
My Oma would recommend serving this with well-buttered toast.
